What is the Current Status of the COVID-19 Vaccine?

As people in countries around the world await the rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine, the first immunizations are now underway with Pfizer’s vaccine, and numerous additional vaccines are going through the research, development and approval processes. With the extraordinary pace of development, the large number of vaccines that are working their way toward widespread distribution, and the different approaches being taken by different countries (and even different states), it can be difficult to know where things stand. Here, vaccine attorney Leah V. Durant has compiled a list of resources that provide up-to-date information on the COVID-19 vaccine:

1. FDA Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the federal agency responsible for approving and overseeing the distribution of vaccines in the United States. Its website provides up-to-date information on COVID-19 vaccine approvals, pending vaccine approvals and the federal government’s plan for distributing the COVID-19 vaccine in the United States. The FDA’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Resources for Health Professionals provide practical information as well.

2. WHO Draft Landscape of COVID-19 Candidate Vaccines

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the entity responsible for overseeing the COVID-19 response effort on a global scale. WHO has been publishing frequent updates on the status of vaccines in development around the world, and its updates include charts that show the number of doses, spacing of doses, and route of administration (i.e. intramuscular or intradermal) for each vaccine under development.

3. New York Times Coronavirus Vaccine Tracker

The New York Times is regularly updating a page on its website with the current status of the various COVID-19 vaccines that are under development. This page also explains the testing and approval processes for vaccines in the United States, and it provides explanations of the differences between the various COVID-19 vaccines that are under development and that have been approved.

4. Mayo Clinic COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Vaccine: Get the Facts

The Mayo Clinic’s “Get the Facts” page explains how coronaviruses work, how COVID-19 vaccines need to work, and the process involved in developing an effective form of immunization. It also explains the difference between live and inactivated vaccines, and provides tips for mitigating your risk of infection while waiting to get vaccinated.

5. Milken Institute COVID-19 Treatment and Vaccine Tracker

The Milken Institute has published an extensive tracking website with data on both COVID-19 vaccines and COVID-19 treatments that are under development and in use. You can see the current status of each vaccine and treatment option, and the site also provides a chart showing which vaccines and treatments are farthest along in the development and approval processes.
